Taking the court for her first major tournament since giving birth to her daughter in September, the 2017 Australian Open title victor claimed a 7-6, 6-4 first-round victory over the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old American had not played in one of tennis's biggest tournaments since the Australian Open in January 2017, when she won her 23rd Grand Slam title.

And now she will go into her first Grand Slam match in 497 days without a single warm-up match on clay with all of her competitive tennis in 2018 having come on hard courts. "I don't know how many aces I saw during the match".

After a 90-minute rain interruption at 5-5 in the first set Muguruza, the 2016 victor, blew 2009 champion Kuznetsova away in the tie break and went on to win 7-6 (7-0) 6-2. She won the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant.

By contrast, Williams is a three-time victor at Roland Garros who first lifted the trophy here in 2002 and most recently in 2015.

The only consolation for Pliskova, the twin sister of world number six Karolina, was finishing with 15 aces, the most hit against Williams since such records began to be kept in 2008.

It called to mind Williams' black "catsuit" that she wore at the 2002 U.S. Open. Barty, considered in doubt after the injury that forced here to retire in Strasbourg, lived up to her first-time seeding at Roland Garros with a thumping 6-3 6-1 victory over Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva in 64 minutes.

Whether it will be enough to compete throughout the fortnight in Paris remains to be seen, but as long as her name remains in the draw, others will be concerned.

Her play today will of course make headlines, but so is her outfit. Garcia, who celebrated her 28th major match win, will face Shuai Peng who beat 6-3 6-4 Aleksandra Krunic in her first WTA victory of the season.

Garcia, who hasn't lost in a Grand Slam event to an opponent ranked as low as No.111 Duan since falling to No.114 Siniakova at 2016 Wimbledon, extended to 16-9 her record in Slam first-round matches.
