Ashleigh Barty is stewing over what might have been after her courageous bid to cut short Serena Williams' grand slam comeback ended in a tense three-set French Open defeat.

The temperature hit 25C in Paris but it did not seem to affect the 23-time major victor in her first Grand Slam match since giving birth last September.

The two-time grand slam victor conceded she did not play her best, but says her focus is purely on racking up wins. "I want to be able to do my best and one day tell my daughter that I tried my best".

She'll try to score another one when she takes on No. 11-seeded Julia Goerges in the third round.

Williams again played in her striking all-black catsuit which has raised some questions over its legality.

The athlete cites Black Panther's fictional setting as the inspiration for the bodysuit, which she wore for medical reasons at the French Open - specifically to prevent blood clots following a somewhat arduous delivery of her daughter.

"It's not a typical outfit".

In a tweet, the three-time French Open victor opened up about her "superhero outfit", writing, "For all the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy - here you go".

The Russian, victor in Paris in 2012 and 2014, is seeded at a major for the first time since testing positive for meldonium two years ago. But as Williams beat Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets, fans were even more excited about what she was wearing.

A fifth ace of the contest won her the set.
