On Friday, Kim Yong-chol visited the White House to deliver a personal letter from Kim Jong-un to President Donald Trump, a week after Trump canceled a proposed summit in Singapore due to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" displayed in North Korean statements.

Since taking power in 2011, Kim has not publicly met with another head of state in North Korea.

Praising the "outstanding political caliber and wise leadership" of the North Korean leader, Assad said he believed that Kim would achieve "the final victory and realize the reunification of Korea without fail". Trump said he did not talk about human rights issues with the North Korean envoy, suggesting the issue of the Japanese citizens kidnapped in the 1970s and 1980s was not brought up.

Naturally, when media personnel wanted to know more about the letter, the US President responded saying, "That letter was a very nice letter".

Since the start of the year, Mr Kim has launched a round of diplomatic meetings with leaders in China and South Korea, and is due to hold a summit with Donald Trump on 12 June in Singapore.

Since then, preparations for the meeting kicked into high gear, with delegations from Washington and Pyongyang holding meetings in the demilitarized zone in North Korea and in NY.

US officials say their talks will be aimed at determining whether a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un, originally scheduled for June 12 but later canceled by Trump, can be restored. It was a very interesting letter and at some point I may be, it may be appropriate and maybe I'll be able to give it to you.

Meanwhile, Kim's popularity hike was less surprising due to photos and videos that went viral of him and Moon joking, hugging and even holding hands.

Last week, Trump abruptly pulled out from the historic planned summit with Kim scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore, citing hostile comments made by Pyongyang. Pompeo and Chief of Staff John Kelly were also spotted inside the Oval Office for the meeting with President Trump. The president and the North Korean delegates then posed for group photographs.

A leaked United Nations report showed that over a five-year-period North Korea sent 40 items to Syria for ballistic missile development and in 2017 Pyongyang made £150 million by violating worldwide sanctions and supplying equipment to Syria. "The details are still being worked out", he said.
