What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid 2018 was supposed to start on the evening of Tuesday, May 15 and end on Thursday evening, June 14.

After a month of fasting and sacrifice, Muslims will celebrate Eid ul-Fitr after sighting of the crescent moon which will officially end the month of Ramzan.

Eid al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan - the month of fasting in which Muslims across the world refrained from eating and drinking during day time.

In India, moon was not sighted and the committee announced that the countrywide Eid celebrations will commence on Saturday.

Meanwhile private sector workers have been given leave for the first two days of Eid Al Fitr - meaning they will return to work on Sunday.

The moon can only be sighted if it is 26 hours and 42 minutes old, it added while stating that at sundown the moon will be 19 hours and three minutes old.

"This year, some 11.5 million people will leave the capital Dhaka to go back to their villages to celebrate Eid", said Mr Moza-mmel Hoque Chowdhury, general secretary of the Passengers Welfare Association. In Delhi, the announcement on the celebration of Eid was made by Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari. Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Japan will celebrate Eidul Fitr on June 15 (Friday).
