But all dogs are not lovely dogs (on the outside, at least).

The 9-year-old beat out 13 other dogs to win the "honor" at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, snagging a $1,500 prize and a massive trophy - and "delivering a shower of slobber as she claimed this year's title", according to a press release announcing her win.

- A counterintuitive but highly sought-after award, that of the World's Ugliest Dog, went to a rescued English bulldog, Zsa Zsa, at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma Saturday.

"She was a puppy mill dog for 5 years in Missouri, and instead of placing her in a loving home at her end of breeding, she was put in a dog auction", Zsa Zsa's profile on the competition website reads.

The pooch's owner Megan Brainard, from Anoka, Minnesota, will receive $1,500 (£1,100) following the victory in Petaluma, California.

The nine-year-old's muscular, rounded front legs and an underbite made her standout from the rest of the crowd. After all, we don't want her taking up space where a TRULY ugly dog could shine.

Martha was nearly blind when she came into Shirley's care, but has since undergone a number of operations and now has a pretty sweet life with her new owner.

Some of this year's contestants had hairless bodies, others had lolling tongues. You can see why she was a victor, too, with her extra-broad shoulders; wide, crooked grin; and a lolling tongue that seems to go on for miles and miles. The victor takes home $1,500. It took her family three days to drive out to Petaluma for the contest.

"She's just so ugly, she's lovely", Ms Brainard told the New York Times.
