Mexico moved closer to qualifying for the last 16 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after beating South Korea 2-1 at the Rostov Arena in Russian Federation on Saturday.

Both teams will conclude group play Wednesday, with Mexico facing Sweden and South Korea taking on Germany.

Los Angeles FC forward Carlos Vela scored a penalty to open the scoring in front of a vibrant crowd in Rostov-on-Don, with West Ham's Javier Hernandez adding the killer second after half-time.

A key part of Mexico's exciting attacking play has been down to three players: Javier Hernandez, Hirving "Chucky" Lozano and Carlos Vela.

We had South Korea as the worst team in the tournament at the outset and they did little against Sweden to change our opinion.

"We have beaten two brilliant and complicated teams, Germany and South Korea", Hernandez said.

Of his own preparations, Shin said: "It's for me to find the weak spot in the team, we've been doing that for several months and I can't disclose it to you".

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio has urged his players not to fall into a "comfort zone" after the highs of opening the World Cup with a 1-0 victory against Germany on Sunday in Group F. Maybe against Germany less will be expected of him so he can try and make an impact under less pressure, but you feel he will need to provide quality if South Korea are to get anything from that game.

Son Heung-min's stunning late strike in stoppage time created a tense finish to the game.

If the appearance of amorous songs of tribute for Osorio felt remarkable, so, too, did the sudden absence of another chant - the homophobic taunt that Mexico fans have traditionally cried out in unison whenever opponents take goal kicks.

No team at the 2018 World Cup has made more fast breaks than Mexico, with the Central American side leading the way with nine spread across their two games.

Mexico has reached the round of 16 in six straight World Cups, but the team has not advanced to the quarterfinals since playing at home in 1986.

A win gave Mexico six points in Group F - and it's looking likely that Mexico can emerge as the victor of the group and avoid a Round of 16 showdown with Brazil.

Lozano proved a constant threat to Korea whenever he came darting down either wing, blasting over in the first half and later having a goalbound shot blocked by opposing captain Ki Sung-yueng.
