The main threat will be risky surf and rip currents along the coast of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states through the middle of the week.
The National Weather Service said on Monday that there had already been three rescues because of unsafe surf conditions. Hurricane force winds begin at 74 miles per hour, and the hurricane center expects Chris to become a hurricane late today or tonight.
Beryl is expected to produce storm total rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches through Tuesday across the Leeward and the Virgin Islands, as well as Puerto Rico. It said winds would fall below gale force during the night, but people on area islands should be alert for possible heavy rain that could cause flooding or mudslides. The storm remains in an environment conducive for gradual strengthening, including warm water and low vertical wind shear. Then it is expected to turn to the northeast and speed away from the USA on Wednesday and Thursday.
