Melania Trump’s Parents Become U.S. Citizens

Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became USA citizens at a private ceremony in New York City.

The Knavs were living in the United States as legal permanent residents with green cards prior to taking the final steps to become full citizens.

Their lawyer Michael Wildes - who attended the ceremony with them - told reporters outside they had met the five year condition but refused to give more details, according to the New York Times.

Asked about President Trump's heavy rebuke of family-based migration, Wildes said: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally".

Trump has vehemently opposed the "chain migration" system, more commonly known as family-based immigration, that lets adult American citizens obtain citizenship for their relatives.

If he was, indeed, so adamantly opposed to allowing US citizens born overseas to bring their relatives legally, why would he be OK with his wife doing the very same? In a Tweet last November, Trump slammed CHAIN MIGRATION or bringing families into the U.S., calling it truly evil.

"He said, 'Hey look, there's people, nice people, they're relaxing, some are jogging, '" Donald Trump said during a rally last week in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, lamenting the lives lost and injured.

These are all moves toward what Trump calls a "merit-based" system.

According to the report, Melania's communications director Stephanie Grisham said since the Knavses are not part of the administration, she is not commenting on them.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has made a point to target undocumented immigrants, whether they have a criminal record or not.

"We just thank everybody for their attention to this very important dialogue that we're having on immigration", said Wildes, who pointed out that his father had represented John Lennon in his immigration case.

"It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family", he said in a statement to CNN.

The ceremony has prompted questions about Donald Trump's flagrant disregard for practising what he preaches, as the First Lady's parents obtained citizenship through a policy he has vocally denounced. She obtained a green card in 2001 and became a naturalized citizen in 2006.

The Knavses are from Slovenia, but now divide their time between New York City, Palm Beach, and Washington, D.C., where they stay with the Trumps in the White House.

It said it is unclear about when or how the couple received green cards.

Under immigration statutes, the Knavses would have needed to have their green cards for at least five years to apply for citizenship, along with fulfilling character, residency and civic knowledge requirements. They had no comment at the time, but the building where they were spotted holds offices where federal immigration officials process applications for citizenship.
