US President Donald Trump has lashed out at former aide and The Apprentice contestant Omarosa Manigault Newman after she released a recording of a call with him in which he appeared not to know she had been let go from her White House job the day before.

Manigault Newman said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that she surreptitiously recorded a number of conversations in the White House for her own protection.

In the recording, which Ms Manigault Newman quotes extensively in the book, Mr Kelly can be heard saying she can look at her time at the White House as a year of "service to the nation".

"General Kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave", Manigault Newman replied.

"Nobody ever told me about it", he responds.

"Whether it's thirty pieces of silver or a seven-figure book advance for you, your publicist, your ghost-writers and others, all that's changed is this book deal and her being fired, so I think he probably feels very betrayed", Conway said.

The Washington Post reported that that after being fired, Omarosa declined a $15,000-a-month job offer from Trump's campaign, which included a nondisclosure agreement stating that she could not make disparaging comments about the campaign, Trump, Vice President Pence, their families, any Trump or Pence family company or asset.

She also repeated her claim that there is footage of Trump using a racial slur during filming of The Apprentice.

"They continue to deceive this nation by how mentally declined he is", she said, referring to Trump, "how hard it is for him to process complex information".

On Saturday, reporters asked Trump during an event at his golf club in New Jersey if he felt betrayed by Manigault Newman. During her brief tenure at the White House, she served, per Reuters, as assistant to the president and as director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison. "Not only is this flat-out false (I've never heard such a thing), but Omarosa didn't even make an effort to call or email me to verify".

How did Manigault Newman lose her job?

The book indicates that her view on President Trump has also changed.

She defended bringing a recording device in to the situation room, a significant breach of protocol and potential national security issue. In a tell-all interview with NBC's Meet the Press, she spoke in dramatic terms about the White House's difficulties with race, honesty and loyalty, at the same time that President Donald Trump is reckoning again with criticism of his equivocal response one year ago to violence at a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Sunday's interview marked the start of Newman's publicity tour for her forthcoming book, "Unhinged: An Insider's Account of the Trump White House". She said Sunday that she personally listened to it after her book had gone to press. They don't walk in and say to the president, "So and so leaked something", or "So and so is fighting with this one in the White House". "I had a blind spot when it came to Donald Trump".
