Should they have seen this coming?

On July 27, Bernstein and his two CNN co-conspirators, dropped the bombshell that President Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, would testify that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

Lanny Davis, a spokesman and attorney for Cohen, said in an interview over the weekend that he is no longer certain about claims he made to reporters on background and on the record in recent weeks about what Cohen knows about Trump's awareness of the Russian efforts.

"Davis is now expressing regret for his role in all of this saying, 'I should have been more clear that I could not independently confirm what happened".

Last week, Davis told Anderson Cooper, "I think the reporting of the story got mixed up in the course of a criminal investigation. We were not the source of the story".

Nevertheless, a A CNN spokesperson told Buzzfeed that "We stand by our story, and are confident in our reporting of it".

Representatives for The Washington Post did not immediately return a message seeking comment. But he had not confessed that he was actually a source until his admission to Buzzfeed.

Lanny Davis (left) said he can not independently confirm what Cohen might tell investigators about when the president learned of Russian efforts to undermine the Clinton campaign. "There's a possibility that is the case". And CNN's, if they don't have any additional information. In other words, the story reports claims that Cohen had said he was willing to make, not the underlying truth of those claims.

Davis told The Washington Post that he can not confirm media reports that Cohen is prepared to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller that Trump had advance knowledge of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting, where Donald Trump Jr. expected to receive damaging information about Clinton from a Russian lawyer. But Davis's new statement that he was a source for a story he now refutes raises questions about what action, if any, the network might take. Big question: Was Lanny Davis also a source for CNN's story?

As someone who has personally made this mistake, it's important to note that caveating information doesn't inure you to blowback.

As Breitbart's Matt Boyle reports, CNN's refusal to retract this very fake news, even after their own source (who is also the horse's mouthpiece) has admitted it's not true, is having a very damaging effect on CNN's morale. So if Davis was trafficking in rumors and CNN printed them, that's their fault. "Just another phony story by the Fake News Media!"
