The US government has charged a North Korean spy over last year's devastating WannaCry cyber attack and the hack that crippled Sony in 2014.

Park, who is believed to be in North Korea, conspired to conduct a series of attacks including the creation of the malware used in the 2017 WannaCry 2.0 global ransomware attack; the 2016 theft of Dollars 81 million from Bangladesh Bank; the 2014 attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment and numerous other attacks or intrusions on entertainment, financial services, defence, technology and virtual currency industries.

The Justice Department has charged a North Korean cyber-operative with attacks and mayhem that prosecutors say was carried out under orders from Kim Jong Un. The studio eventually posted it on YouTube, a remarkable turn of events for a major wide release in a time before Netflix streaming Will Smith and Michael Bay movies. The complaint said there was no evidence Lockheed was breached. Sony was responsible for The Interview, a fictionalized assassination of North Korea's leader. "The North Korean-backed conspiracy attempted to crush freedom of speech in the US and the U.K. It robbed banks around the world".

The WannaCry cyberattack took place in 2017 when the ransomware infected about 300,000 computers.

Park was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Kavanaugh hearing: Trump’s Supreme Court nominee faces Senate grilling

The U.S. Treasury Department is also reportedly ready to issue new sanctions against the perpetrators of the attack, though it's not immediately clear how many people will be targeted.

The company is affiliated with the North Korean government hacking unit called Lab 110.

"These charges show that we will not tire in our efforts to identify those who believe they can hide behind a computer and cause havoc across the world, regardless of their motivation or status", he said.

Computers at hospitals and GP surgeries in 48 NHS trusts were frozen past year by the WannaCry ransomware virus - which demanded a bitcoin payment for users to regain access.

Investigators were able to track down the hackers by tracing their origin to a segment of some 1,024 internet protocol addresses assigned to North Korea.

The attack on Sony Pictures, for example, started with hackers doing research on the company in September 2014, and the malware used to attack its computers was customized as the result of a period of "sustained covert reconnaissance" by the hackers within its network before they launched the attack that disabled its computers. The malicious links carried North Korean-controlled malware.
