Tiger Woods is doing that thing he does where he gets everyone all riled up early in a tournament.

"It's been something I've been struggling with all year and it's been much better the last couple of weeks", he said.

Woods has shot 61 four times on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational which he won for his 79th career victory on tour, but he is still stuck on that mark. After beginning the day tied for the lead, Woods fell to a tie for 10th five behind leader Xander Schauffele.

Two of his birdies came on the par-5s, and another at the par-4 11th where he knocked an approach shot from 95 yards to 2 feet.

Woods hit nothing longer than a 9-iron into the par 4s.

The 14-time Major victor (42) struggled with the blade in the first two playoff events, finishing 40th in the Northern Trust and tied 24th in the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston on Monday.

The 42-year-old American has made progress all season in his recovery from nagging back pain, leading in the final round of July's British Open before settling for a share of sixth and taking second in last month's PGA Championship.

It gave Woods an eight-under score and he now shares the lead with Rory McIlroy, who has two holes remaining to take the ascendancy.

Another birdie at the first hole, his 10th, took Woods to seven under. He still hit 14 of 18 greens, but just didn't give himself as many chances.

"Sometimes if a major season doesn't go your way and you haven't done what you wanted to do, it's just a bit of a reset, let's go again, reassess your goals", McIlroy said.

McIlroy matched him but still left the course feeling a twinge of what might have been, for he actually had a golden opportunity to become the first European to shoot 59 on either of the game's two main circuits.

"It was one of those days where it was out there", McIlroy said. Woods was between clubs, went with a soft four-iron and yanked it into the rough. McIlroy drained an eight-foot birdie at the 18th, then holed three more putts between eight and nine feet consecutively as he made the turn.

Due to the possibility of poor weather, tee times for the second round have been moved up Friday to 7-9 a.m., with Woods teeing off at 8:06 a.m.
