Flo's On The Go: Massive Storm Barrels Toward East Coast

Florence's maximum sustained winds Friday evening were estimated to be 105 km/h, with the storm centred about 1457km east-southeast of Bermuda and moving west at 13km/h.

Hurricane Florence has weakened to a tropical storm but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.

Improving atmospheric conditions are expected to allow Florence to regain its former strength - the storm reached major hurricane status Wednesday, believed to be a Category Four hurricane, peaking with maximum sustained winds of 210km/h.

While we still have a long way to go and there will be changes/fine tuning in the forecast, Hurricane Florence is running out of opportunities to evade the East Coast.

Behind Florence is two other storms that the National Hurricane Center is monitoring.

On its current track, Florence's winds are forecast to strengthen to 140 miles per hour by Wednesday morning, making it an extremely unsafe Category 4 hurricane.

With quick strengthening expected, keep it tuned to to the NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team for the latest updates on Florence, and all systems in the Atlantic. "The cone itself isn't touching the east coast yet".

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are now juggling predictions for two tropical storms, Helene and Florence, a tropical depression and another low-pressure area that popped up Friday between the US mainland and Florence.

Tropical Storm Helene is just off the African coast and tropical storm warnings have been issued for the southern Cabo Verde Islands. Helene has winds of 45 mph, and is 330 miles from the Cabo Verde Islands.

Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm Thursday.

Tropical Storm Florence is becoming a "better organized" weather system that will likely strengthen into a hurricane late Saturday, weather forecasters said.

'This setup will guide Florence on a west to northwesterly course into next week'.

Tropical Depression Nine is expected to become a tropical storm later Saturday - and a hurricane by early next week - over the eastern tropical Atlantic. It is pretty far south and with high pressure ridging in place over the Atlantic and Florida, should in the short and medium term be a Caribbean system.
