Tiger Woods has sent fans into a frenzy during the opening round of the BMW Championship, blitzing his way into a share of the lead with fellow superstar Rory McIlroy at Philadelphia's Aronimink Golf Club.

The 14-time major victor Woods and McIlroy have a one-stroke lead after both shot eight-under 62 which marked the American's best PGA first round since the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic.

The birdies started flowing on the first hole and kept rolling throughout the day.

The overall victor of the FedEx Cup will receive a $10 million bonus, while the Tour Championship carries a first prize of $1.62 million.

Woods and McIlroy had played a nine-hole practice round together on Tuesday.

"So, it was just one of those days you had to stay aggressive".

Tiger Woods had his lowest round since his last victory more than five years ago. Woods went back to his trusty putter that helped him win 13 of his 14 majors and the move paid off big time.

I couldn't get the ball to the hole and when I did I was reading too much break. That round was easily six or seven under par, and I turned into even par, which is not what I needed to do today.
