Sam Darnold has thrown two touchdown passes in his National Football League debut as the New York Jets scored 31 unanswered points in the third quarter to ruin Matt Patricia's debut as head coach and thump the Detroit Lions 48-17.
The 21-year-old Darnold was the youngest quarterback to start a season opener since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
The former USC star, drafted No. 3 overall, shook off the nerves and finished 16 of 21 for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
Darnold connected with Quincy Enunwa for his second touchdown pass of the night to make it 24-17 before Darron Lee picked off Stafford to run in a 36-yard interception return for the score.
Lee led the way with two interceptions, including one for a touchdown - the Jets' first defensive touchdown in 74 games, dating to 2013.
But this was more about Darnold and the Jets than it was about Stafford, Patricia and the Lions.
USA has seen evidence of Syria preparing chemical weapons in Idlib: envoy
A Syrian man walks past a stall in the rebel-held northern Syrian city of Idlib's central Clock Square on September 6, 2018. Those remarks capped a week of rising USA rhetoric opposing the Idlib operation.
Delanie Walker likely out for season with dislocated ankle, associated fracture
The Titans and Dolphins have withstood multiple weather delays in this game, and there is still about one quarter left to play. The secondary secured three interceptions, two by Reshad Jones , one of which he returned for fifty four yards.
Aaron Rodgers: 'I'm Playing Next Week'
Cobb was certainly deserving of some best "Best Supporting Actor" consideration for his role in Green Bay's reversal of fortune. An offensive-minded coach, Nagy had the aggressive Bears' offense pushing the Packers around the field in the first half.
Then the game started, and for about 10 seconds - as long as it took Sam Darnold's arm punt to be returned for a pick-six on the Jets' first play - the Lions were the best team in the building. If the Lions can't find a way to correct things and their plays continue to be predictable, Monday will only be the beginning of things to come.
Stafford was 27 of 46 for 286 yards and a TD pass to Golden Tate early in the third quarter to tie it at 17. And Darnold grew the Jets' lead.
Time lapse: The Jets scored 31 points in 12:20.
Darnold's start to this game was pretty much the worst-case scenario. He tried to hit Bilal Powell running into space to his left, but Diggs was waiting and pounced on the pass. On his first play from scrimmage, he threw an interception that Quandre Diggs returned 37 yards for a touchdown. Luke Willson of LaSalle, Ont., makes his debut as starting tight end for the Lions. If they establish the run vs. Detroit, which is a very real possibility, they will lighten Darnold's burden, keep the ball out of Matthew Stafford's hands and keep the score low - which is exactly how they can win.
The game continued, and the Jets outplayed the Lions in every phase. Between LeGarrette Blount, rookie Kerryon Johnson and receiving threat Theo Riddick, there's enough juice for the Lions offense to fire on all cylinders, even if the preseason was ineffective. Their only first down came from a Jets penalty. He threw his first touchdown pass with 1:51 left in the first quarter. He made an on-target deep throw to wide receiver Robby Anderson for a gorgeous 41-yard touchdown.
"Just seemed like we were in his head as a defense, but that's just preparation for us all around".
