Titled simply Joker and due for release in October 4th, 2019, the film is directed by Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs). It's technically not even confirmed that Phoenix is this movie's Joker, just that he's the star.
Phillips posted a photo of Phoenix sans Joker makeup with the caption "Arthur", which is presumably his name before he dons the creepy smile. The pic shows Phoenix looking at the camera, with a slight smile on his visage. After all, the Joker's skinniness is part of what makes him eerie.

A set of images of Joaquin on set were also shared on JustJared where Phoenix can be seen laughing manically and playing with a clown.
After the disappointing critical reception to their DC Extended Universe of movies, Warner Bros hopes for the Joker movie to start a new spin-off series of one-shot movies.
The now untitled movie is described as "an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".
