Former premier Nawaz Sharif, who maintained a low profile in politics ever since his release from prison, chaired the CEC meeting.

The Sharifs were first released on a five-day parole by the Punjab government after the death of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz on Sept 11 to allow them to attend her funeral. However, the Islamabad High Court freed the trio on bail last month and suspended their sentence after they challenged the Avenfield verdict. A source at the time said that Fawad had also provided "incriminating evidence" against the ex-chief minister in the Ashiana Housing corruption case, making it hard for him (Sharif) to defend himself before a combined investigation team of the NAB Lahore.

On Saturday, an accountability court granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a 10-day physical remand of former Punjab Chief Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif in the Ashiana Iqbal Housing Scheme case.

Yesterday, Hamza Shehbaz met Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz at their Jati Umra residence to discuss the younger Sharif's arrest.

Shehbaz's arrest came days after the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) warned PML (N) leaders of their arrests and other legal actions.

President Shehbaz Sharif was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday in a Rs 14 billion housing scam case.

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Khursheed Shah condemned the arrest, calling it an insult to Parliament.

The inquiry conducted by the anti-graft watchdog states that Shehbaz, as the chief minister of Punjab, unlawfully assumed powers of Board of Directors of Punjab Land and Development Company (PLDC), misused his authority and acted in connivance with Fawad Hassan Fawad who at the time was Implementation Secretary to Punjab CM.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said PML-N leaders are reviewing the situation and the party will form a strategy after thorough deliberations on the issue. "PTI is responsible for this political victimisation and should be ready to reap what it is sowing today", he said.
