Prince Charles's arrival in The Gambia was the first royal visit since the 2017 ousting of President Yahya Jammeh who withdrew from the Commonwealth and threatened to change the country's official language from English.

Prince Charles would later meet with key players in the cocoa industry to discuss ways to sustain the country's mostprofitable resources and local policymakers to discuss renovations and reuse of the historic landmark, as part of efforts to redevelop the Accra beach front.

Critics of the Commonwealth see it as an outdated relic of Britain's imperial past, while advocates say it gives small countries like Gambia a seat at the table with larger states, and has potential to improve life for its 2.4 billion residents.

The Royal Highness' visit to Ghana comes at an "opportune moment", said British High Commissioner, H.E. Iain Walker.
