Trump's campaign had billed Hannity as a "special guest" at the rally, but Fox had said that wasn't so. "This was NOT planned".

Hannity also blasted "most in the media" for being "absolutely clueless", echoing his "fake news" media rant when he was on stage with Trump in Missouri. He was speaking before a frantic final day of campaigning that included rallies in Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri, where he was introduced by radio personality Rush Limbaugh.

"You left nothing on the field, eleven stops in eleven cities".

"FOX News does not condone any talent participating in campaign events".

In 2016, he was part of a Trump political video - a stunt that Fox claimed to have been unaware of.

Trump did not care for the soft-focus ad, which notably did not mention him, according to a person familiar with the president's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly.

A spokeswoman for Fox News did not immediately return a request for comment.

On Tuesday, Hannity was back on Twitter denying that his onstage appearance in any way contradicted his earlier statement that he would not be onstage - because it was unplanned. But in an interview with The New York Times a year ago, he said he was a journalist, more specifically an advocacy or opinion journalist.

This came after Hannity insisted that he would interview the president back stage and hold a live show from the venue, but wouldn't actually get on stage to campaign on the president's behalf. They want endless investigations into Trump. "There's a woman on Saturday night who treats us very well", Trump said, praising Pirro's fiery opening monologues as "always brilliant".

That talking point was repeated regularly throughout the rest of the night on Fox News - accepted and repeated mainly because Trump said it. And on Wednesday, he said she deserves to be House speaker.

Trump called Pirro to join him onstage too, and she in turn encouraged the room full of Trump supporters to channel their energy into voting.
