UPDATE: THERE are reports the horse injured in this year's Melbourne Cup, Cliffsofmoher, has been put down.

O'Brien's son Joseph, who trained Melbourne Cup victor Rekindling a year ago, said The Cliffofmoher's death was "very sad".

"First and foremost this is for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin".

Appleby credited Sheikh Mohammed and his powerful global stable for the win, saying "they were all family".

Cross Counter won the Cup, the Charlie Appleby-trained stayer handing Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy his third Cup triumph.

Charlie Fellowes thinks Dr Koukash won't get the opportunity to strip, playing down Magic Circle's win in the Chester race over the English trainer's Cup contender A Prince of Arran.

"So I can't believe it".

IT was on their many road trips to Yorkshire that aspiring trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey Kerrin McEvoy forged a bond that culminated with Cross Counter becoming the first British victor of the Melbourne Cup. "It's a very special day and one I will never forget".

He is the sixth horse to die in the Melbourne Cup since 2013 according to the RSPCA.

In a flawless completion to a stellar year highlighted by Masar's Derby victory, Thunder Snow's Dubai World Cup and 27 other G1s, Cross Counter epitomised the Godolphin philosophy of pushing global boundaries and striving for perfection. "Today's tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks these horses face every time they run, and highlights that behind the gloss and glamour of Cup celebrations there is a dark reality". He [Michael Walker] gave him the most lovely ride.

Aidan O'Brien fielded three contenders with Rostropovich faring best in fifth, but the race was overshadowed by a fatal injury sustained by Cliffs Of Moher passing the post for the first time.

The Newmarket-based Appleby, who gave Godolphin its first Epsom Derby victor, Masar, in June, added: "This is huge for everybody".
