Jerome Corsi, a confidant of Trump associate Roger Stone and the former Washington bureau chief of conspiracy theory site InfoWars, told CBS News on Friday that he is negotiating with the special counsel's office for a plea deal. Earlier this month he said in a YouTube video that he expected to be criminally charged after cooperating with Mueller's inquiry for two months. Corsi's associate is a longtime friend of the president, Roger Stone.

The spokesman for the special counsel, Peter Carr, declined comment on Friday.

Corsi, who found a friend in Trump over their shared interest in the false theory that President Barack Obama wasn't born in the US, said on his radio show that he had been cooperating with Mueller's team for months and described it as "one of the most frightening experiences" of his life.

It's also not known if any plea by Corsi signals a new raft of charges by the special counsel or just that investigators are aggressively pursuing cases against people they believe made false statements to investigators.

Corsi did research on Democrats during the 2016 election and provided it to Stone, who served as an informal adviser to Trump's campaign at the time. CNN has reported that Mueller's team is examining the possibility that Stone had another intermediary beyond Credico, and that Corsi might have been involved. "He looks like he has been squeezed, but as far as I know, he refuses to lie", Stone said.

Federal investigators want to know whether Stone had advance access to emails hacked from the Democratic Party and the account of John Podesta, campaign chairman of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, and obtained by WikiLeaks. American intelligence agencies have assessed that Russian Federation was the source of hacked material released by WikiLeaks that damaged Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Stone told the Post in October that Corsi met with Trump in 2016 and that Mueller seemed interested in those meetings.

Stone added that Corsi has been "under a tremendous amount of pressure and it is beginning to affect him profoundly" and that Corsi is "being asked over and over to say things he simply does not believe to have occurred".
