US President Donald Trump is using the announcement by General Motors to shut down factories in North America to advocate his plan for imposing more tariffs on imported vehicles.

GM, now the second largest electric vehicle seller in the US, is on track to reach the 200,000 threshold by the end of this year, tech news site Clean Technica has reported, meaning that most of the electric cars that GM sells in 2019 and beyond won't qualify for the tax break anyway.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said President Donald Trump agreed to support tax legislation that would help General Motors keep more jobs in the United States.

Since General Motors announced on Monday that it will cut 14,000 jobs and idle manufacturing plants in the Midwestern states of OH and Michigan, Trump has had the company squarely in his line of sight, firing off several tweets attacking the decision of GM and its CEO Mary Barra.

As he has done with several companies since he took office, Trump promised retribution for GM if it closes the plants.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, GM tried to appease the Trump administration while at the same time justifying the decisions it announced Monday. "We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.for electric cars", he wrote in two Tuesday afternoon tweets.

GM is committed to maintaining a strong manufacturing presence in the USA, as evidenced by our more than $22 billion investments in US operations since 2009.

"We're going to move forward and hope we can get this through Congress", the senator also told CNN on Thursday morning.

GM has been lobbying Congress, along with Tesla Inc, to lift the current cap on electric vehicles eligible for tax credits, but any action by Congress before 2019 is a long shot, congressional aides said. Sherrod Brown hold at least one common goal: getting General Motors (GM) to abandon its plan to lay off workers at an OH plant.

"He said he wants to work it and I am working with his trade representative". He argued that would make US -made vehicles of the same class more competitive and create jobs at home.

Trump boasted on Twitter Wednesday that Steel Dynamics, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was opening a new plant in the Southwest, creating 600 jobs. And he announced the study of executive powers that could allow him to punish GM on his own - without congressional approval, which might be hard to acquire. That figure was about 50 percent cars just five years ago.

China now imposes a 40 percent tariff on USA automobiles, while the United States has a 27.5 percent tariff on Chinese vehicles.
