George H.W. Bush to lie in state at the Capitol

On the living room table at Sam Zakhem's Lakewood home, a small bronze statue of former President George H.W. Bush demands attention.

The days-long national farewell to Bush will begin Monday with a commemoration in Houston, where the Bushes lived for years and where he died on Friday surrounded by friends and family.

"The result was the end of the Cold War and nuclear arms race".

Soon after he reached the zenith of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait, the USA economy began to sour, however, and voters began to believe that Bush, never a great orator, was out of touch with ordinary people. But the world of politics was calling this son of a United States senator.

Now that Donald Trump has set himself at odds with a significant part of voters with his fiery rhetoric, some point out that he could learn a thing from the late 41st president. President Bush was a man of unimpeachable character and integrity whose decency and kindness earned him the respect and admiration of the nation he served.

In 2017's The Last Republicans, author Mark Updegrove wrote that Bush, a quintessential Republican, had voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Bush's remains will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday morning.
