San Diego • Tour operators and medical and dental offices in the Mexican border city of Tijuana are reporting a slowdown in business since a caravan of Central American migrants arrived.

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to stop the migrants, sending troops to reinforce the border and attempting a procedural change, so far denied by the courts, to require asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are heard.

"We've got a challenging and still potentially volatile situation in Tijuana", said Kevin K. McAleenan, the commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on Fox News Tuesday morning.

The incident is the latest in a growing list of chaotic happenings on the border in recent weeks, with the arrival of the migrant caravan in Baja California.

McAleenan noted that the migrants' confusion at the border has left many desperately looking for a way to cross the border illegally.

A number of the migrants ran to try to escape capture, but most walked slowly to hand themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol officials waiting under floodlights. We've got well over 7,000 migrants there.

But about 90 minutes later, she and her children were seen on the US side of the border, according to the report.

As the migrants wait, some 1,700 from the caravan have been moved to a stronger shelter in Tijuana, after rains ruined makeshift tents, soaked blankets, soiled personal possessions and turned the sports stadium where they had been camped into a health risk. Some are crossing illegally and avoiding the wait. "They were brought to the border by a group that told them they would be able to cross easily into the U.S.to present asylum claims, and that's not the case".

Some migrants may hope to defeat the odds and penetrate one of the most fortified sections of the southern USA border.
