The Federal Communication Commission announced Friday that it will investigate the nationwide CenturyLink outage, which affected 911 service in multiple spots across the county. Pai called the outage "particularly troubling" in a statement. The mobile phone alert, which was also mistakenly sent to people in OR, urged people to call a number with a 360 area code.

But Friday, CenturyLink customers in Washington state and MA noted that the outages led to sporadic outages for 911 calls.

Thousands of customers around the country, including Louisiana and Wyoming, are still experiencing outages Friday morning, according to Newsweek.

Late Thursday, CenturyLink said engineers and technicians had identified a network element that was impacting customer services and officials estimated that operations would be fully restored within four hours. Whether you're in a auto crash, a burning building, or facing a serious medical problem, the last thing you want to hear when you dial "911" is a busy signal.

DownDetector reported initial signs of the outage around 1 a.m. PT Thursday.

The outage began Thursday, but it affected more than just Internet customers because many USA businesses and even some regular folks, including many in Nebraska, have switched to voice-over-Internet-protocol phone systems that rely on the Internet to transmit business calls.
