GOP Sen. -elect Mitt Romney said he wrote a blistering criticism of President Trump in an opinion piece because of the commander-in-chief's decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria.

"The president has not risen to the mantle of the office", Romney wrote.

"Like other Big Government Republicans who never liked Reagan, Mitt Romney wants to signal how virtuous he is in comparison to the President", Kentucky Sen. Somewhat cryptically, Romney says the "project" to "repair failings in our politics at home" must begin "with the highest office once again acting to inspire and unite us". He also said that Romney, like "a lot of these NeverTrumpers", disliked President Ronald Reagan as well, pointing to Romney's past positions criticizing Reagan.

Donald Trump has hit back at Mitt Romney, labelling the Republican a "Flake" following fierce criticism over his policies and character.

The world "needs American leadership", he argued, and "the alternative. offered by China and Russian Federation is autocratic, corrupt and brutal".

Romney won his Senate seat by almost 32 percentage points this past November.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment, but Trump fired back in a tweet today taking aim at Romney's failed 2012 White House bid.

India, Russia A Privileged Partnership: Putin's New Year Message To PM
The message to Assad comes weeks after Trump announced that the US will remove 2,000 troops from Syria. The two leaders also failed to meet in Paris during the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

Romney called presidential candidate Trump a fraud and a phony in 2016.

Trump questioned whether Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election, would now seek to play a similar role as the retiring Republican Senator Jeff Flake, among the few GOP lawmakers who have frequently criticised Trump's actions. They were photographed dining together as Trump mulled making Romney his secretary of state, and the President endorsed Romney's Senate bid previous year. The New York Times reported last January that Trump had been joking, and McDaniel told Glamour in September that "no person in the world" could tell her to change her name. His op-ed was a shallow political miscalculation and a pathetic attempt to be the center of attention.

Two days before he's sworn in as Utah's junior senator, the on-again, off-again critic of President Trump announced his arrival in Washington with an op-ed bashing the president's character and praising his policies. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. "He should be happy for all Republicans", Trump wrote, offering this advice to Romney: "Be a TEAM player & WIN!"

However, Graham said, Mr. Trump would not be willing to work with Romney "if he believes you are out to get him".

"As an immigrant, a combat veteran, a black American, a millennial, and as a member of the RNC, I wholeheartedly support and endorse President Trump for re-nomination", he wrote.

Mitt Romney entered 2019 with a fiery rant that cast doubt on Donald Trump's fitness and suitability to serve as the most senior politician in Washington. McDaniel wrote in a tweet Wednesday that her uncle's "attack" played into the hands of Democrats and the media. But he said setting policy is only part of a presidency.
