The State Department pledged to "work cooperatively with the committees".

Democrats have launched a sweeping probe of Trump, an aggressive investigation that threatens to shadow the president through the 2020 election season.

Nadler, who has already said that it's "very clear" that Trump obstructed justice, didn't mention the I-word in a statement on Monday. And you know the handsome thing: no collusion. No collusion. It's all a hoax. It's a political hoax. Meanwhile, Mueller, who took over the FBI investigation in 2017, isn't expected to charge Trump with any misconduct in a forthcoming report.

The letter notes that House investigators are now addressing the security clearance issue but goes on to specifically request a "concurrent criminal probe" from the Department of Justice in order to "safeguard our national security secrets and ensure our laws are being upheld".

This investigation across multiple committees is focused on the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy and the separation of children from their families at the border a year ago.

The committee is also asking the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Justice Department and others for documents related to possible pardons for Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

No pardon was given, and Cohen ultimately wound up pleading guilty and cooperating against the president in separate investigations by the special counsel and by federal prosecutors in NY.

Conspicuously absent from the list of Nadler's targets - who have two weeks to respond - is the president's eldest daughter Ivanka Trump, a senior White House advisor married to Kushner.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that they 'don't comment on security clearances'.

"The Democrats cannot stand the loss, they could not stand losing in 2016".

Criminal inquiries into the Trump campaign's links to Russian Federation and other issues will carry on no matter what happens with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, as other prosecutors continue cases that began with him but now have a life of their own.

But Ivanka Trump was omitted, even though former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen told lawmakers last week he briefed her numerous times about a Trump skyscraper project in Moscow.

The office also has been scrutinizing the president's Trump Organization business and sent a subpoena to Trump's inaugural committee about a record $107 million in donations in 2016.

While admitting there was no evidence yet uncovered to support the allegation that Trump has actually engaged in any criminal activity, Nadler asserted, "Our goal is to hold the administration accountable for the obstruction of justice, the abuse of power and the corruption".

"I will be consulting with Members of the Committee to determine our next steps", he concluded.

"We may add other people". And though Nadler said on Sunday that "impeachment is a long way down the road", the possibility of removing Trump from office looms over the investigation.

The President pushed harder for his son-in-law to get a clearance because of his wide-ranging portfolio, which includes a Middle East peace proposal, and because of heightened scrutiny on Kushner's inability to secure a clearance, sources said.
