Angelique Kerber vs Bianca Andresscu. She reached the girls' singles semifinals at the 2016 US Open and the 2017 Australian Open, and won the Aussie Open and French Open girl's doubles titles in 2017, with Carson Branstine.

"If you believe in yourself, anything is possible", Andreescu said as she hoisted the crystal trophy as the youngest player ever to win one of the WTA's prestigious Premier Mandatory tournaments.

She said she hoped the Indian Wells title would do for her what it did for Naomi Osaka a year ago.

Bruneau stepped away from Fed Cup captain duties previous year to focus on coaching Andreescu and others in the Canadian women's program.

It was the flawless start for the 18-year-old Canadian, breaking Kerber and mixing up the pace she was throwing at the German. Kerber raced to get it and sent a forehand down the line to get to deuce.

The first game was the lone blip for Kerber who otherwise had played brilliantly in the set. "It's just hitting heavy to her backhand with more spin".

The veteran left-hander finds herself on the opposite end of the career trajectory as Andreescu, with 28 finals appearances under her belt, 10 of which were at Indian Wells. He just needed to convince her that she had the fight, that she had the strength, that she had to go for every point.

"She did a good job then at the end, especially the last three games", Kerber said. She had already received treatment in the right arm and shoulder area.

"I just want to enjoy this moment, because I don't want to take anything for granted", said Andreescu.

She broke Kerber in the next game, taking a 15-30 lead with a lovely drop shot-lob combination, and giving herself a break point with an overhead victor before converting with another forehand victor to launch a run of three straight games for a 5-3 lead. The Canadian had a slight opening at 15-30 but could not capitalize, slicing the ball into the net to send this match into a decider.

Andreescu had to call on her last reserves as Kerber saved three match points in the next game on the way to earning a break.

The eighth-seeded German pulled ahead in the set by breaking in the fifth game.

Bruneau told Andreescu to push and to stay strong under the adversity.

"It just feels unreal what happened", Thiem said.

The teen had three match points on her serve before trying one of her patented drop shots.

Ranked 60th coming into the tournament, Andreescu will rise to 24th in the world with her first WTA title.

But Andreescu's riposte was remarkable as she responded immediately by fashioning her fourth Championship point on the Kerber serve, converting it with a strong return before falling to the court in triumph.
