Libya Tripoli airport BOMBED in air strike - all flights suspended

Medical facilities reported 47 people killed and 181 wounded in recent days as eastern Libyan National Army (LNA) forces seek to take Tripoli from an internationally-recognized government, the World Health Organisation said.

The United Nations said 2,800 people had been displaced by clashes and many more could flee, though some were trapped.

The forces of the Libyan Government of National Accord have regained Tripoli International Airport after defeating the forces of the retired Libyan Major General Khalifa that launched an attack on the capital Tripoli.

The same official said militias from the coastal towns of Misrata and Zawia - which are not under the GNA's direct control - deployed troops to the capital as part of the counter-offensive against the LNA.

Maj. Gen. Mohamed al-Manfour of Hifter's Libyan National Army, told the Libyan Address newspaper they bombed targets at Mitiga after receiving information that the United Nations -backed government forces were preparing to target them.

"Refugees told UNHCR that they were frightened and anxious about their safety, given ongoing fighting in the vicinity, and that they were left with minimal supplies", the statement said, adding the agency was working to ensure other detained migrants and refugees were not in harm's way.

Fierce clashes Sunday near Tripoli saw Haftar's fighters and other powerful western Libyan armed groups exchanging fire including air strikes.

In another sign of the situation worsening on the ground, a contingent of U.S. forces supporting the U.S. Africa Command evacuated Libya for security reasons, a U.S. statement said.
