"Yes, I think spying did occur", Barr said.

He says he believes that "spying on a political campaign is a big deal".

Asked again about spying at the end of the hearing, Barr tempered his tone "I am not saying improper surveillance occurred".

The bombshell statement was made during his testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee in a back and forth exchange with Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. "It was after my interrogation with the Mueller team that I went out, hired private investigators and found out the guy had used a fake name, Henry Greenberg, and that he had been working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 17 years".

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday morning, the Republican president railed against the Department of Justice inquiry into whether the Trump campaign had conspired with the Kremlin to sway the 2016 election. "And at least one government informant met several times with Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos, current and former officials said", wrote the New York Times.

"That's great news he's looking into how this whole thing started back in 2016", Representative Jim Jordan of OH, the top Republican on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said Tuesday of Barr's interest in the issue.

Asked if he believed the Mueller probe was a witch hunt, Barr would only say: "It really depends where you are sitting".

Critics of the Russian Federation investigation say the warrant on Page was unjustified and have also seized on anti-Trump text messages sent and received by one of the lead agents involved in investigating whether the Trump campaign was colluding with Russian Federation.

The Mueller investigation has just wrapped up and, although the US Congress and the public have not yet seen the resulting report, Barr issued his own summary that said Mueller had not found collusion.

I asked Schiff whether one can envision a less alarmist scenario, in which Barr redacts less than we expect (he has vowed not to undertake any redactions to protect Trump) and the Gang of 8 gets a full report.

Indeed, Barr even said the Justice Department would be examining the genesis of the Russian Federation probe. Later he praised FBI Director Christopher Wray.

The California Democrat also said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that she's "very concerned" about Barr's handling of special counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia report. Then FBI agent Peter Strzok, who worked on the Hillary Clinton email investigation, responded by saying, "No, no".

Barr noted much of this has been done already, both in Congress and by the Justice Department inspector general, but that he will pull it all together to see if there may be "remaining questions to be addressed".

Steele's work ultimately was underwritten by Democrats, and because the dossier remains unverified and - in some cases, its contents have been debunked - critics charge that Page's rights were violated.
