76ers and Celtics finalize deal, Celtics will make Jimmy Butler run next

The Celtics will get an additional first-round pick in the 2018 or 2019 draft in exchange for moving down two spots in the first round this year. In return, the Sixers send the rights to the No. 3 pick to the Celtics as well as the rights to the team’s first-round pick in 2018 or 2019.

We won’t officially know where any players are going until the draft kicks off on June 22nd, but at this moment the first pick appears to be all but a done deal. They come into the draft with the hope that whichever player they wind up with will be capable of contributing from day one.

But apparently the feeling wasn’t mutual, if you believe Danny Ainge. When I played him, I thought he could do everything offensive. With the Lakers zeroing in on UCLA guard Lonzo Ball, all signs point to Ainge taking Kansas swingman Josh Jackson with the third pick.

The player Philadelphia wants is clear: The 76ers wouldn’t say it Monday, but they’re going to take Fultz barring something cataclysmic happening before Thursday.

The former Celtics player, now their president of basketball operations, said the magnitude of the trade put it “under the microscope”, and he acknowledged that he, as with others in his position, would be “judged” on how such big moves ultimately turned out. The Celtics don’t hold the No. 1 pick anymore, but will still have plenty of opportunities to acquire young talent over the next few years. “The timing of the deal and the protections on the pick suggests both teams were negotiating on common grounds”. The Celtics could pull the trigger on some of these first round picks to bring Butler, one of the best two way players in the National Basketball Association, to Boston with a starting lineup that already features Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, and Al Horford.

Colin Ward-Henninger of CBS Sports also reported there is a chance that the Celtics will receive a 2021 first round pick.

“We feel like it’s a jump-start for us”, Ainge said. These two scenarios will ensure the Boston Celtics get to pick Markell Fultz.

Durant and Beasley were both No. 2 draft picks.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 25 games during his lone college season at Washington, excelling on a team that finished 9-22 and lost its final 13 games. Specifically, the Dubs could use their Bird rights on Iguodala for a more affordable deal than what he might obtain on the open market. They received Brandon Knight and Kendall Marshall from the Milwaukee Bucks, who received Michael Carter-Williams from the Sixers and Tyler Ennis and Miles Plumlee from the Suns.
