President Donald Trump resumed beating his “fake news!” drum Tuesday, citing CNN after the network retracted a story about alleged ties between Trump’s allies and Russian Federation.
On Thursday, CNN published a story from investigative reporter Thomas Frank about an investigation into possible ties between Trump associates and a Russian investment fund. He said in a statement: “On Friday, CNN retracted a story published by my team”. It was retracted the next night, and CNN apologized to Anthony Scaramucci, the Trump transition team member named in the story.
The resignations are a black eye at a sensitive moment for the news organisation, which has emerged as a regular target of Mr Trump and his supporters, who have accused the channel of harbouring a bias against the President. The network also routinely bears much of the brunt of Trump’s rhetorical attacks on the press.
The specter of a $100 million libel suit scared CNN into retracting a poorly reported story that slimed an ally of President Trump’s – and forcing out the staffers responsible for it, The Post has learned. He said that “CNN is looking at big management changes now that they got caught falsely pushing their phony Russian stories”.
“Do you believe the media should go back and look at anonymously sourced stories on Russian Federation and Trump and maybe start a review process and retract where necessary?” the reporter asked.
A spokesperson for CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Believe me, the Trump supporters are going insane with this, and they should, because the story apparently was incorrect.
Frank was an on-air reporter for “CNN Investigates” and a longtime newspaper writer, per Variety.
The White House promoted the group’s video during yesterday’s briefing.
Of course, that CNN produces fake news isn’t news to us. The network did not conclude the report was conclusively wrong, according to the person with knowledge of the incident, but said executives believedit was not solid enough for publication.
Scaramucci accepted the network’s apology, but deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pounced. Bonifield later goes on to say that the president is justified in saying “Look, you are witch hunting me”.
The failure to follow proper procedures is what led to the resignations, the CNN executive said. Seth Mandel, the op-ed editor at Rupert Murdoch’s conservative New York Post, said conservatives should praise CNN: “This is pride-swallowing, grownup stuff”.
