The NBA Finals MVP decided last week to decline his $27.7 million player option for 2017-18 to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 before re-upping with the Warriors.
The Timberwolves are one of at least seven teams known to be interested in Golden State free agent Andre Iguodala, according to ESPN.
Golden State Warriors President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Bob Myers has been named the 2016-17 NBA Executive of the Year, earning his second such honor in three seasons, the league announced yesterday at the inaugural NBA Awards in NY. Earlier this month, sources told ESPN that Paul intends to give the San Antonio Spurs?some? serious consideration this summer.
The NBA free agency period will begin Saturday, meaning players can reach verbal agreements with teams at that time. He made just $12.1 million this past season.
It remains to be seen how much less Durant will take next season than the estimated max he’s entitled to score in the $35 million range. But he is going to wait until the team completes most of its offseason business before re-signing.
The Warriors would have to use salary-cap space to sign Durant to a similar deal in July, which would nearly certainly prevent them from re-signing Iguodala or Livingston.
Iguodala, an extremely important piece of the Warriors juggernaut, will be No. 3 on the priority list behind superstars Durant and Curry, who are both expected to return to the Oakland-based franchise.
To that end, Kevin Durant, who reportedly is already planning to take less money than he could get in order to help with salary cap flexibility, will be patient in re-signing in order to allow the Warriors to get their ducks in a row. Durant would be eligible for the five-year “supermax” extension in 2019 when the Warriors would have his full Bird rights.
