FSU falls to LSU in game one of College World Series

Florida State’s Dylan Busby (28) is greeted at the dugout by Taylor Walls (10) after hitting a two-run home run in the first inning of an NCAA men’s College World Series baseball game against LSU in Omaha, Neb., Saturday, June 17, 2017.

LSU, which beat Florida State, 5-4, in the College World Series, is the congressman’s alma mater.

Oregon State hasn’t lost since April 29, when it dropped a 7-5 decision at home to Southern California.

The Tigers won their opening CWS game for the first time since 2009.

LSU and Florida State are both red-hot as they head to Omaha.

Jared Poche’ (11-3) worked 2 2/3 shutout innings in a rare relief appearance for the win. The game will be televised by ESPN, and it will be carried by affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network.

LSU coach Paul Mainieri had purple beads hanging from his neck, an Omaha ballcap resting his head and a supersized grin on his face as he proudly addressed reporters following a marathon super regional title game victory in the early hours of Monday morning. They’re used to dealing with adversity. It’s an exciting time, and we’re excited to go there. “We like to think we’re just as good as anybody up there, but when you’re playing that caliber of competition you’ve got to play your best”.

Sure, he probably saw himself following Alex Lange to go on and match LSU’s all-time wins record; he just didn’t envision himself following Lange in the same game.

“I’m sad to say I am not joining them because doing so would only create further distraction for my teammates, more turmoil for my family and given the high profile of the national championship, direct even more unwanted attention to an innocent young girl”, the statement said.

“At the end of the day we took advantage of a couple of missed plays by them, and it was a little bit of a weird game”, Mainieri said.

“I thought Poche’ was really sharp tonight”, Mainieri said. But I guess God had a better plan and wanted it to happen in Omaha.

Pitcher Tyler Holton, who threw 7 1/3 innings for Florida State, giving up three earned runs while striking out five, took some of the blame for the first inning play.

That decision looked ill-advised because Freeman appeared dead to rights, but catcher FSU Cal Raleigh mishandled the ball and Freeman slid in safely, with Duplantis running all along and reaching third base with one out. Wells then made a bad throw into the infield, while Freeman was full speed ahead all the way to home plate. The biggest one came in the eighth when right fielder Steven Wells made two errors on the same play, and catcher Cal Raleigh committed another, allowing LSU to tie it at 4-4. Because Duplantis was attempting to steal second on the play and the ball got away from Raleigh, Deichmann was able to take first base. “Four out of 59”, Mainieri said with a laugh.

“I had to wipe the first three at-bats clean and focus on getting the job done”, Deichmann said.

Poche’ came on and allowed two singles, then turned the game over to Hess with two outs in the ninth.

When Busby, who had staked FSU to a 2-0 lead with a 1st-inning home run, chopped out to third baseman Josh Smith, Flowers broke for third base and first baseman Nick Coomes’ peg across the diamond nailed him for an unorthodox 5-3-5 double play. When I grew up, and I’ve seen some insane things, but I never saw a guy score from first base on a strikeout.

Eastman was relieved by classmate Blake Workman, but Oregon State designated hitter Trevor Larnach and right fielder Jack Anderson greeted him with consecutive singles up the middle to clear the bases and tie the game, 5-5, heading to the seventh inning.
