Family members of the attackers said they were deeply religious men who acted on their own. Israel identified a lot of them as attackers.
In its statement, IS said the attack was “revenge for the religion of Allah and the sanctities of the violated Muslims”.
The ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack, their first on Israeli soil, however it is not clear if the attackers were aligned with them or not.
The attackers were from the village of Deir Abu Meshaal, to the south of the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Police spokeswoman Luba Simri said the Israeli military had so far found no connection between the three assailants and any armed group.
Two of the men killed were said to be 18-year-old from al-Bireh, near Ramallah, while the third suspect was a 31-year-old from Hebron.
Fatah, the political party of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, condemned Israel for killing the attackers, calling it a “war crime”. “There are great differences and conflicts between Daesh and Hamas“.
Instead, an obscure Palestinian group known as the “Groups of Martyr Baha Eleyan” claimed responsibility.

According to the police, two Palestinian bystanders were wounded in the shootout, one moderately and one lightly. It said 350 people were arrested.

The Israeli army said the assailants appeared have acted independently, like numerous attackers in a wave of unrest that has rocked Israel and the occupied territories since October 2015, violence Israel has dubbed “popular terrorism”.
While hard to verify the ISIS claim, the group claimed responsibility in the immediate hours after the attack, rather than waiting a day to claim, as they have done with previous attacks across Europe. Numerous stabbing attacks have targeted border police deployed at the Damascus Gate.
Since September 2015, Palestinian assailants have killed 43 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British student, mainly in stabbing, shooting and vehicular attacks.
The soldiers also assaulted many Palestinains, and clashed with local youths, wounding many with live fire and rubber-coated steel bullets.
