Maritime conglomerate Maersk group confirmed that its operations were hit by the cyber attack.
“The central IT infrastructure of AP Moller-Maersk (APM) installed at the Hague has been affected by a cyber attack on 27th/28th June 2017.the IT infrastructure of Terminal, installed, managed and operated at AP Moller-Maersk at JNPT also got affected due to cyber attack on their central IT infrastructure”, the statement said. “The global attack has impacted APM terminal of the JNPT port which is run by AP Moller-Maersk”. They are trying to work manually, a port official told PTI.
JNPT officials acknowledged that though they are doing their best to help the company, there is very little they can do. There has been a partial impact at APM Terminals (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd).
The ransomware virus crippled computers running Microsoft Corp’s Windows by encrypting hard drives and overwriting files, then demanded $300 in bitcoin payments to restore access.
Australia’s Cyber Security Minister Dan Tehan told reporters Wednesday that officials have not yet confirmed the same computer virus was responsible for ransomware attacks on two Australian companies, but that “all indications would point to” that being the case.
The company said Wednesday it’s too early to assess the damage from malicious software that has crippled computers across the world. The safety of our employees, our operation and our customers businesses is our top priority.
“Right now, we understand that it is a global issue at a group level where 75 ports have been affected”.
The current attacks come weeks after the Wannacry ransomware attack, which affected systems of many companies.
Other worldwide firms that reported being affected include America’s Merck pharmaceutical company, Russia’s Rosneft oil giant, British advertising giant WPP and French industrial group Saint-Gobain.
“We have been taking proactive steps… we have sent out advisories (on the cyber-attack and the malware)…”
India’s shipping ministry said it was “alive to the situation and are taking steps to ensure minimum disturbance to trade, transporters and more importantly local citizens”. He was speaking at the national convention in the national capital on “Digitalization: Opportunities and Challenges”.
Prasad added that the government is keeping a close watch on the matter.
Shipping Ministry also said, JNPT has opened up its parking lots for cargo destined to the private terminal.
Ukrainian railways said in a separate statement that the cyberattack has caused some disruptions with money transactions, but its operations haven’t been affected.
