JOHN MCENROE BELIEVES that 23-time Grand Slam title victor Serena Williams would struggle to break the top 700 on the men’s tour.
According to the 58 year old retired tennis star, were Serena to play on the men’s circuit she would be ranked “like 700 in the world“.
“Maybe at some point a women’s tennis player can be better than anybody”, McEnroe said.
The seven-time Major victor said the best thing Williams would have going for her on the men’s tour would be her mental strength. “What he said about her [Williams] being an incredible player is correct – explosive, powerful and she puts in a lot of work”.
“If she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world“.
Hitting back at McEnroe, Williams took to Twitter to respond and asked the fellow countryman to keep her out of his statements that are not factually based.
McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she’s not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?
May we suggest to the male tennis players, as per Serena’s request, that they respect the incredible tennis star’s privacy and let her get on with having her baby.
McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles victor, called Williams “best female player ever – no question”, in comments to National Public Radio aired Sunday.
“For me, men’s tennis and women’s tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports”, Williams said.
But when asked whether she was the sport’s best ever, regardless of gender, he made clear he does not think so.
“I’ve never heard John say anything absolutely stupid – he knows his stuff”, Tursunov added.
It doesn’t matter how Williams would fare against male tennis players.
The Los Angeles native has 23 Grand Slam singles crowns and 14 Major doubles titles.
Williams, who is pregnant, is taking a break from tennis but plans to return next year.
In April, Serena revealed the news of her first pregnancy on Snapchat, posting a photo of herself showing off her baby bump at 20 weeks.
