New cyber-attack reaches US companies

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that infects a computer and restricts users’ access to the infected machine until a ransom is paid to unlock it, an alert issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Awareness System explained.

The ransomware encrypts files on Windows computers and demands a $300 ransom to have them unencrypted. Perhaps you are busy looking for a way to recover your files, but don’t waste your time. “Nobody can recover your files without our decryption service”.

The Danish shipping giant said it had been hit across multiple regions by a computer outage.

Reports also said the attacks impacted Russian metal maker Evraz, French construction materials firm Saint Gobain and the world’s biggest advertising agency, WPP but it could not be ascertained whether it was by the same virus. “Norway’s National Security Authority said an “international company” there was affected“, Washington Post reporter Andrew Roth wrote in the story.

“It’s like WannaCry all over again”, F-Secure chief research officer Mikko Hypponen told Fortune on Tuesday.

The report stated that Windows computers that have installed both the March 2017 and April 2017 security-patch bundles should be immune to the ransomware worm.

“Nothing is stopping Petya now”.

European countries seem to be worst hit, with the Ukraine, Russia and the United Kingdom all reporting major disruptions.

Russian state oil giant Rosneft said earlier that its servers suffered a “powerful” cyberattack but thanks to its backup system “the production and extraction of oil were not stopped”.

It is not hard to protect your PC from Ransomware attacks if you keep your system updated with Windows updates provided by Microsoft.

In Ukraine, Yevhen Dykhne, director of the capital’s Boryspil Airport, said it had been hit too.
