The MOU is subject to internal approvals.

CDB Aviation, the aircraft leasing arm of China Development Bank, is in talks to place orders with both Boeing and Airbus and could complete at least one of the deals by the show. And to show it’s really throwing down the gauntlet, Boeing said it will unveil orders and commitments for more than 240 of the new jets from more than 10 customers, throughout the week.

The Max series of jets are created to be a more fuel-efficient version of the workhorse 737, Boeing’s most popular commercial plane.

The 66-year-old New Yorker, who has been with various units of Airbus since 1985, has outlasted more than a half-dozen counterparts at Boeing since he was appointed chief salesman in 1994. “This is another demonstration of the popularity of our latest, fuel efficient 737 MAX and 787 airplane models”.

The MAX 10 gives Boeing an entry in the increasing popular “MoM” or “middle of the market” segment, which defines aircraft that are neither traditional narrow bodies – such as the 737 or the Airbus A320 with capacity for around 150 or more passengers – nor are they larger widebodies.

Airbus is preparing to roll out a novel A380 wingtip design to rally support for the world’s largest passenger jet by improving its fuel efficiency, according to a prototype seen on Saturday.

“Many airports are running out of capacity and for those airports this is a ideal aircraft”, said Ajay Singh, the chairman of low-priced Indian airline SpiceJet, as his company signed a provisional deal to buy 40 MAX 10s.

The US manufacturer announced plans on Monday to develop a super-long version of the single-aisle jet to take on Airbus.

The Chicago-based planemaker projects that the Max 9 and 10 will together capture 25 percent to 30 percent of 737 sales over the next 20 years. The 737 Max 9 is expected to be delivered to airlines in 2018.

In addition to purchasing the Airbus planes, Gecas converted 20 orders for current Max versions to the larger variant. The engines’ position on the wings will be moved to affect the aircraft’s centre of gravity.

The cumulative changes, which Boeing reckons it has achieved on a shoestring budget, are resonating well with customers, Mr McAllister said.

Leahy says he plans to retire this year-“sooner rather than later”-and move from Airbus’s Toulouse headquarters back to the US, handing the sales operation over to his deputy Kiran Rao, 53″.

But he said questions remain over to what extent that demand would be met by four-engined jets like the A380 or big twinjets closer to 400 seats, like the Boeing 777-9 and Airbus A350-1000.
