Muslim New Zealanders will today celebrate the Islamic festival Eid ul-Fitr following the sighting of the new moon and will come together to celebrate at Parliament next week, Minister for Ethnic Communities Judith Collins says. Vice President Hamid Ansari wished people and stressed that festival’s significance for strengthening brotherhood.
“The fast of Ramadan shows how it feels to be hungry; Eid-ul-Fitr shows the real meaning of selflessness, goodwill and community”.
Large congregations of Eid prayers will be held at Eidgah, Hazratbal, Jenab Sahib Soura and TRC ground in the city as thanksgiving at the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on USA visit, also greeted Muslim brothers of India on Twitter.

President Pranab Mukherjee yesterday expressed hope that the festival will strengthen the people’s unflinching faith in unity and common destiny.
Calling for an end to violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also issued a special message of peace and brotherhood on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“Counties Manukau Police would like to wish our Muslim brothers and sisters all over New Zealand Eid Mubarak”.
