President says Scalise ‘in some trouble’ as House gavels back into session

The House used a voice vote Thursday to approve a resolution lauding the Capitol Police for protecting lawmakers and stating that “violence has no place” in society.

“How dare they?” retorted Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, pointing to a year of venomous attacks by Republicans including President Donald Trump.

“The. ways they could do that is you’ve ever been treated by a mental physician or in a mental hospital, or you’ve been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of domestic battery”, said Wagner.

The House of Representatives’ No. 3 Republican leader was in grave condition when he was first shot. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise’s hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

On Thursday night Scalise was honored at the annual congressional baseball game at Nationals Stadium, where a record crowd showed up.

Republican Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee scored in the first innings, enjoying a different sort of adrenaline than the one he experienced on Wednesday when he passed the gunman over bloodied ground to take shelter in a dugout.

On that day, a man later identified as the attacker approached Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC in the parking lot of the Alexandria, Virginia, ballfield, asking him, “Excuse me, sir, who’s practicing today, Democrats or Republicans?” as Duncan recalls the encounter.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries. “I’m prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does”, he said. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot. Both had appeared on the House floor earlier Thursday.

Lucee Laursen of La Crosse, Wisconsin, interning in the capital for a nonprofit, said, “It’s showing that we might have differences in political spheres but we come together for a good cause”. “We love you.” Lewis led a House floor Democratic sit-in previous year when Republicans refused to consider gun control legislation.

The deciding factor will probably be Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., who may be the best to have ever played in the game.

The congressional game, which dates to 1909 and is a summertime tradition on Capitol Hill, is a rare example of bipartisanship in an increasingly polarized Washington. More than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity so far, the game’s organizers announced. She noted that she has received numerous threats herself over the years, and is now the target of millions of dollars in negative ads in a House district in Georgia where a hard-fought special election will take place next week.

For their part, some Republicans seem taken aback by an intensity on the left that threatens to overwhelm them in the 2018 midterm elections. “The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers”.

Democrats bounced back from a loss past year, when the game was played the night after they held an all-night session on the House floor to protest Republican inaction on gun legislation.
