The stage for Bill Cosby’s next legal challenge shifts to California with a hearing scheduled Tuesday to set a trial date in a lawsuit accusing him of sexually assaulting a teen at the Playboy Mansion more than 40 years ago.
Huth was 15-years-old when Cosby allegedly assaulted her in 1974.
The California lawsuit is one of 10 Cosby is now facing, including three sexual battery or defamation cases in California and seven defamation cases in MA.
When that trial starts, Cosby may not have wrapped up the so-called sexual assault tour that Cosby reportedly planned to embark upon.
“He does not take lightly these criminal charges”, Agrusa said. If Cosby does give public appearances to discuss the criminal matter, Allred said she may hold “a parallel speaking tour” in cities where he appears.
Judy Huth is one of more than 50 women who have come forward with decades-old accusations of inappropriate behaviour, drugging and/or rape against Cosby since late 2014.
On Twitter on Tuesday, Cosby said any information about public plans “will be given at the appropriate time”.
Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents many of Cosby’s accusers, said “justice will come” after a judge declared a mistrial in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault case.
Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt said by email that the legal team will not let him speak about sexual assault.
Agrusa said the town halls under consideration never included Cosby speaking about sexual assault. “I believe that round two will ultimately provide the acquittal that Mr. Cosby seeks in Norristown”, she said of the criminal case.
Cosby has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, pleaded not guilty, and insisted that his encounter with Constand was consensual. A Superior Court judge in April ruled against Cosby’s request to have the case thrown out.
But even setting those charges aside – which we don’t – there is ample damning evidence in his own words that Cosby is neither a victim nor equipped to advise others about their sexual behavior. The back-and-forth over Cosby’s next steps comes after his criminal trial in Pennsylvania for an alleged sexual assault ended in a mistrial earlier this month.
As is his prerogative under Pennsylvania law, Montgomery County D.A. Kevin Steele says he will seek a new trial with the same charges against the actor. July 30, 2018, is the tentative beginning date of Judy’s civil case.
