Trump can ask for those large donations because the money is to be split between his re-election campaign and Republican Party groups.
Among the fundraiser’s attendees: Longtime GOP fundraiser-turned television commentator Mica Mosbacher and Florida lobbyist and party financier Brian Ballard were among the fundraiser’s attendees.
CNN notes that the media was first told it could not attend the event, but after some reporters protested that decision the White House said it would allow the press pool to attend. He argued the president was in violation of the Domestic Emoluments Clause, as Trump profiting from his event at his own hotel would result in the commander in chief receiving payment from the federal government on top of his salary.
Several non-governmental organisations rallied about 100 protestors in front of the hotel, who shouted chants of “Shame!” ahead of the event.
Trump’s predecessors also took heat for commingling presidential and political duties when they began running for re-election.
The plaintiffs note, for instance, that foreign delegations regularly opt to stay at Trump’s hotel when in Washington, that foreign governments have chosen to buy or rent property built by the Trump Organisation, or that Chinese authorities have registered Trump-owned trademarks.
Trump technically leases the hotel from the General Services Administration, and profits are supposed to go to an account of the corporate entity that holds the lease, Trump Old Post Office LLC. “Nevertheless, the GSA – whose acting administrator was appointed by Trump – ruled on March 23, 2017 that the president’s ownership of the hotel did not violate the lease”.
Prior to taking office, Trump announced he would cede control of his business empire to his adult sons, Eric and Donald Jr.
Early Wednesday, Trump tweeted that “The failing @nytimes writes false story after false story about me”.
The RNC has already raised more money online in the past six months than it did in all of 2016, which is a testament to the president’s success in reaching donors. He’s held five so far, and campaign director Michael Glassner says those events help keep him connected to his base of voters.
Over the weekend, Mr. McConnell made clear his unhappiness to the White House after a “super PAC” aligned with Mr. Trump started an ad campaign against Senator Dean Heller, Republican of Nevada, after he said last week that he opposed the health care bill.
But hours later, the White House reverted to the original plan.
Some 40 months before he stands for re-election, the president is holding court at a $35,000-per-plate donor event Wednesday night at his hotel near the White House.
